Here Is Our Helpful Guide To Help You Pass the HAZMAT Test

Even though you may be taking a specialized course, there are some common ways to make sure you’re passing the test the first time around. Keep in mind that each community has specific standards that must also be met, so tests in your area may be different than in other locations. Here’s what you need to do:

Keep notes throughout the class. Even though you’ll be given information in the classroom environment, even if you’re taking the class online you’ll want to take notes from the instructor. The HAZMAT test can be difficult and there may be items on the test that are only told to you from the instructor, not the supplemental material.

Keep track of the rules and regulations. A majority of the HAZMAT tests involve your specific knowledge about the rules and regulations that are specific to hazardous materials. This is especially true if you are obtaining a HAZMAT endorsement for your CDL. Pay specific attention to this regulations and know them well because on many tests, they are responsible for at least one-third of your total score.

Understand the rules of communication. Whether you are loading or unloading dangerous goods, there are specific rules of communication that are taught during the HAZMAT course. This applies to all professional fields and all hazardous materials. This is also an essential part of the course, so be sure to know as many of these rules as possible because they will also likely make up a minimum of one-third of your total testing score.

Know how to handle an emergency situation. Many of the questions on a HAZMAT test are multiple choice, but that’s not always the case. The one area of the test that tends to trip up the most people is the emergency situation scenarios. Each response to an emergency must be specifically tailored to the hazardous materials that are given in the example. You must be able to provide the adequate response in written form to get credit for your answer.

Recognize what equipment you’ll need for what emergency. Did you know that not all fire extinguishers are rated to put out all fires? If you use the wrong fire extinguisher on a fire, you can actually spread the fire and the hazardous materials out over a wider space! Certain dangerous goods require a certain material to contain the issue at hand. You will need to know what response is required for specific leaks, spills, or exposures.

Knowing what you’ll need to pay attention to in class is just the beginning of being able to pass the HAZMAT test. Knowing how to study for the test is also an essential part of the equation! Are you ready to see how ready you are right now?

What Kind of HAZMAT Certification Are You Pursuing?

The way you need to study for your upcoming test is based on the type of HAZMAT certification which is being pursued. Each specialization has certain requirements that are focused upon, so by studying the components that are emphasized, you’ll have an advantage when it comes to the final exam.

Let’s take a look at the specializations to see what your primary studying focus should be:

CDL Certification: The tests for working with hazardous materials in this field involve the rules and regulations that you’ll encounter on a local and national level. The focus will be on the placards that are used for each type of HAZMAT item, what type of documentation is required by law, and how to properly respond when there is an accident. Advanced training in this area may also involve how to clean-up or contain an incident.

Daily Professional Use: The tests for those who will be using HAZMAT items every day in the course of their duties tends to focus on how to properly store an item, use it, and respond to an emergency situation. There will likely be a lengthy discussion about the information that is on an MSDS and a portion of this discussion is likely to be on the test. If you are required to transport dangerous goods from room to room or to different worksites, then this will also likely be on the test.

Supervisor Training: If you are going through the training to be a supervisor, your HAZMAT test questions will be geared more toward how to direct traffic during different scenarios. You’ll be asked to recognize emergency situations, how to limit exposure to a potentially large crowd, and how to direct direct reports during the clean-up process.

Specialization Training: There are a number of training classes that involve specific hazardous materials and what your response to them must be. This can be anything from acids to liquid gasses to asbestos. You will need to know the specific components of these materials, how to recognize them in any environment, and how to protect yourself from being exposed. You’ll also cover what a good response to an exposure should look like.

By knowing what to expect on each HAZMAT test, you’ll be better equipped with the knowledge you need to study so you can pass it the first time around! Are you ready to explore some questions you might encounter on your upcoming exam? Check out our practice test article here.
